Vow Renewal Ceremony

As a wedding officiant you may want to offer your services for Vow Renewal ceremonies.

Many couples choose to honor and celebrate their years in the sacred bonds of matrimony by having a vow renewal ceremony in which they reaffirm their wedding vows. I have put together the wording for a Vow Renewal Ceremony by taking the wording from the Promise Of Faithfulness, Tenderness and Helpfulness Wedding Ceremony and adapting it to be appropriate for a renewing of vows ceremony.

Compare the original Wedding Ceremony wording to the Vow Renewal Ceremony wording to get an idea of how I made changes in order to transform it.

Greeting

The Wedding Minister/Officiant faces the guests. The Wife stands to the right of the Officiant. The Husband stands to the left of the Officiant. The Wife and Husband stand facing the Officiant/Minister.

Officiant:

Dearly beloved, the firmly established and loving marriage of this couple, ____________ and ____________ has indeed proven to be constant and enduring. We gather here to celebrate their joy, their love and steadfast dedication that has graced them with ____ years of marriage as they renew their marriage vows today.

Invocation

Officiant:

Dear God, thank you for your enduring love and for giving the gift of love to ____________ and ____________. Today they want to re-dedicate that love to each other. We are grateful that your loving presence will surround this vow renewal service and be with us now and always. Amen.

Charge to Wife and Husband

Officiant:

____________ and ____________ , the covenant which you made ___ years ago was a beautiful and sacred expression of your love for each other. As you have chosen to honor that enduring covenant and once again pledge your vows to each other, and to re-commit your lives to each other, we ask that you do so in all seriousness, and yet with a deep sense of joy; with the deep conviction that you shall continue to dedicate yourselves to a dynamic growing relationship of trust, mutual support, and caring love.

The Pledge or Betrothal

Officiant:

As an expression of your willingness to re-commit yourselves to one another, I invite you to face each other and join hands.

Couple face each other holding hands.

Officiant: To Husband:

____________ is it your intention to renew your pledge to your wife, ____________, that you will continue to respect her, and love her as God intends with the promise of faithfulness, tenderness, and helpfulness, as long as you both shall live?

Husband Responds: I will

Officiant: To Wife:

____________ is it your intention to renew your pledge to your husband, ____________, that you will continue to respect him, and love him as God intends with the promise of faithfulness, tenderness, and helpfulness, as long as you both shall live?

Wife responds: I will.

Wedding Vows

Officiant: To Husband:

As a further sign of your heartfelt desire, I invite you to repeat these words after me.

The following can be broken down line by line instead of said all at once.

____________ , I renew my everlasting vows to you, as we cherish all the moments we have shared thus far in our journey within the sacred bonds of matrimony and as we continue to share all that is to come, encompassing all sorrows and joys, all hardships and triumphs, all the experiences of life, a permanent commitment made in love, kept in faith, lives in hope, and eternally made new.

Officiant: To Wife:

As a further sign of your heartfelt desire, I invite you to repeat these words after me.

The following can be broken down line by line instead of said all at once.

____________ , I renew my everlasting vows to you, as we cherish all the moments we have shared thus far in our journey within the sacred bonds of matrimony and as we continue to share all that is to come, encompassing all sorrows and joys, all hardships and triumphs, all the experiences of life, a permanent commitment made in love, kept in faith, lives in hope, and eternally made new.

Blessing of the Rings

Officiant: To the Couple: Please join hands.

Couple are clasping hands (Husband right hand then on top of that Wife right hand, left hand, left hand) so that ring hands are on top as the Officiant holds hand his/her hand over rings as they recite the blessing.

The circle is the symbol of the sun, earth, and universe. It is the symbol of peace. Let this ring be the symbol of unity and peace in which your two lives are joined in one unbroken circle. Wherever you go, return unto one another and to your togetherness.

Exchange of Rings

As the blessing is over, now the Officiant is no longer holding her/his hand over the couples clasped hands. The Couple continue to have hands laid on one another.

Officiant: To the Couple:

____________ and ____________ repeat, after me, these words:

The following can be broken down line by line instead of said all at once. The couple, in unison will repeat after the officiant.

____ years ago we gave each other these rings, as we gave to each other ourselves, with love and affection. We shall continue to wear them in peace always.

Wedding Prayer /Blessing

Officiant:

God blesses you with happiness, prosperity and gives you peace. May your love for each other never cease in becoming deeper and more blissful as you carry onward in your sacred journey of married life. May you always draw forth, each from the other, the highest and the best. May you be open and receptive to divine inspiration and guidance. May you express poise, patience and understanding with each other. May your lives blend together in harmony and joy and may your days be good and long upon the earth. Amen.

Pronouncement of Husband and Wife

Officiant:

Now that ____________ and ____________ have pledged their love and faith to each other, and have expressed their complete and pure re-dedication to one another before God and our gathering I reaffirm them as husband and wife and what God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.

You may seal your renewal of marriage vows with a kiss!

Benediction

Officiant:

May the courage of the early morning’s dawning, the strength of the eternal hills, the peace of the evening’s ending, and the love of God be in your hearts now and forever. Amen.

Announcement

The couple turn to face the guests as the officiant presents the couple.

Officiant:

It is with great honor I once again, present to you Mr. And Mrs._________!

Very nicely done Avery. I will edit it to be a more Christ centered version for a deeply religious couple celebrating their 40th wedding wedding anniversary. If they approve it, I will try to send you a copy. Warmly, Gail

Thanks Gail, that would be great! I should also adapt the "Your Lives Together In Jesus Christ Ceremony" to be a vow renewal ceremony. I will do that soon. Thanks again!

Thanks Jenny, I am so glad you find the site helpful! I saw your nice website! Congratulations to your vow renewal couple. I am sure you will do a fabulous ceremony for them! I love it that you are a celebrant from Australia! I enjoy reading about Australia, such a wonderful and exciting land! One of my favorite books (was my Texas grandma's favorite book and she introduced me to it) is "A Town Like Alice", I always think of that book when I think of Australia! Thanks again for your encouraging comment, I appreciate it so much! Many blessings to you!

Thank you so much - I have been working on a service for a couple in my congregation celebrating 50 years together! I've done much of the service but was looking for some thing different for the prayer after the vows - this is perfect, thanks so much.
