What’s in a name?

Well these days it’s not just the name of your business; it’s your domain name (website name) as well.

Therefore, you may want to create and register both your business name and your website domain name at the same time.

Here’s a list of things to keep in mind as you decide on what to name your Wedding Officiant Business:

Do you want to use the name of your town, region or state in the name of your business?
This would be especially good if your business is located in a tourist area or popular wedding destination region. Or even just for people searching the internet for a wedding officiant in their area, having the name of your area in the business name may prove helpful in your website search rankings.
Will it look nice on your keepsake ceremony booklets?
Many wedding officiants offer a keepsake ceremony booklet as part of their services/package. It is common for the ceremony booklet to have the name of your Wedding Officiant Business on the front as well as on one of the pages saying something like “A wedding celebrated by “My Wedding Officiant Business”.

Does it have an appealing sound or a harsh sound, does it “roll off the tongue”?

Think about your name being user friendly and easy to understand and communicate. Using hyphens, numbers and alternative spellings may prove frustrating when verbally advising someone of your company name. Think about when you communicate your business name and website name to someone over the phone, it’s helpful if the name is easy to understand, to spell and to explain.

Do you want the name to be descriptive of a setting?

Perhaps you will use verbiage describing the place you plan on using for the weddings; a garden, the ocean, a lake, mountains, woodlands or forest.
How long is the name?
Keep in mind that you will be typing your business name into various locations and you want all the characters to fit in the name fields for directories, listings, maps and social media sites.

Will the name look good on a business card?

What associations does the name evoke?
Make sure the connotations are appropriate for the feeling you are going for… something positive, loving and wedding themed.

Is the domain name user friendly?

The general rule is to avoid using hyphens, numbers and alternative spellings in a domain name. However there is some debate as to how much this really matters in regards to search engines. Think about the ease of writing, typing and speaking your business name.

Does your domain name contain commonly used internet search phrases or keywords?
It may help your search rankings if your domain name has words and phrases in it that are used by your target customer when they are searching the internet for a wedding officiant.

Does your state require you to file a DBA and if so is the name you wish to use already taken?
If you are going to be operating your wedding officiant business as a Sole Owner then you need to find out if your state has any DBA filing requirements. Some states require you to file a DBA, Doing Business As, and pay a fee. Check with your jurisdiction for the applicable requirements involved in registering your business name. You can find out more about registering your business name with your state at the SBA, Small Business Association website. The IRS also has info about the different business structures options at their website.

Is the domain name already taken?

You can check if the domain is taken at GoDaddy. I use GoDaddy (affiliate link) for registering my domains, they have cheap prices. Go to GoDaddy to see if the domain name you want is already taken.

For more tips on naming a business you may want to visit SBA's how to name a business page.
