In contemporary weddings the minister may ask both sets of parents “Who gives these individuals to be given in marriage”? The parents answer “We do”. Other scenarios may have a different relative, family representative or child of the bride or groom that “gives them away”.
On the other hand, some folks enjoy having this traditional element and see it as a rite of passage as is represents a shift in the dynamic of their family of origin as they start a new life and begin a new family with their spouse. They want to honor their parents and are glad to have their parents approval of their marriage made public at the ceremony.
